They grew all kinds of vegetables: cabbages, spinach, peanuts, potatoes, tomatoes, red hot chillies, even aloe vera. Every morning she'd work on the compost in the windowboxes lining the balcony - sometimes she'd get me to turn the earth and I'd watch the earthworms struggle in the morning sunlight. There were flowers and an assortment of tropical plants, ever-changing - once mum went through an orchid phase. It was an odd kind of garden, being so high up, but in retrospect I was immensely lucky - not many people have the energy to tend to that these days, and my mum's fantastic cooking was augmented by the home-grown vegetables. I had a very positive experience in doing so. My customers were mostly long-haul truck drivers who were just stopping for the night. Their company paid for them to sleep in a hotel rather than in their trucks. The drivers were all tired from being on the road all day, but were quite willing to talk pleasantly on most any subject. I found them to be sincere and down to earth. It was a pleasure to pick these men up at their trucking company stations and transport them to our hotel. The drive was only about ten minutes and afforded us time to talk about their company, and about current affairs in the news. Occasionally I would transport other people as well, such as individuals to and from the airport. One time I delivered a woman to an auto repair shop where her car was being repaired. Going on Holiday With a Caravan in Tow posted on 27 January 2013 in Holiday and Travel When I was a small boy my family would take me on caravan or motorhome holidays. We would get up at the crack of dawn and pack all of our belongings into the caravan. It was a big white monstrosity and I felt embarrassed in the back of the car as we chugged along the motorway. I know that the other drivers were laughing at how slowly my parents drove along. When we arrived at the campsite my parents parked the caravan up and put the car next to it. It always seemed like quite a palaver for them to connect up the electricity and the gas to the caravan. I wish that we had gone on normal holidays but I was just never that lucky. I was even jealous of the children at the campsites who stayed in tents. At least that would have not been so obvious to the other drivers on the motorway.
